Daniel Allen is a New York City–based, Drama Desk Award–nominated scenic designer. His work ranges from intimate character-driven productions to large-scale musicals and events, always guided by a commitment to storytelling through environment, architecture, and visual composition. Whether developing new works or reimagining established classics, Daniel approaches each project with the belief that scenery should do more than create a setting—it should serve as an active storytelling partner, shaping the dramaturgical world of a production and drawing audiences further into its story.
His work has been produced on Off-Broadway stages and at regional theaters and performing arts centers across the United States. A multi-award-nominated designer, Daniel received a 2026 Drama Desk Award nomination for Outstanding Scenic Design of a Musical for his work on Beau: The Musical. His portfolio encompasses new musicals, contemporary plays, classic works, and large-scale live events, reflecting a versatile design practice rooted in curiosity, craftsmanship, and a commitment to storytelling.
In addition to his independent design work, Daniel has served as an assistant and associate to many of the industry's leading scenic designers on Broadway, Off-Broadway, and in regional and international theater. His collaborations have included productions at Circle in the Square Theatre, Lincoln Center Theater, Manhattan Theatre Club, Roundabout Theatre Company, Second Stage Theater, The Guthrie Theater, The Old Globe, Berkeley Repertory Theatre, Dallas Theater Center, La Jolla Playhouse, Williamstown Theatre Festival, Shakespeare Theatre Company, New York City Center Encores!, and the LG Arts Center in Seoul, among many others. Throughout these experiences, he has had the privilege of working alongside acclaimed designers including Tobin Ost, Rachel Hauck, Arnulfo Maldonado, Wilson Chin, Donyale Werle, Adam Rigg, Allen Moyer, Lee Savage, Meredith Ries, Lawrence Moten, Daniel Zimmerman, and Ryan Howell.
Originally from Richmond, Virginia, Daniel developed his passion for theater and design within the city’s vibrant creative community. Richmond’s rich artistic and historical character continues to inform his approach to visual storytelling. He remains drawn to projects that challenge expectations, foster meaningful artistic partnerships, and create memorable experiences for audiences.
